If your catalytic converter fails short of blowing up, you may be able to fix it yourself with a few simple tools and some common knowledge. Here are a few tips to get you started:
1. Check the engine oil level – One of the first things you should do if your cat is acting up is check the engine oil levels. If there's not enough oil in the system, the cat will struggle to function properly and may even produce abnormal emissions.
2. Remove the catalyst – On most cars, the catalyst is located behind the front grille on either side of the engine. You'll need to remove the front grill in order to access it. Once you've removed it, use a screwdriver to pry off either side of the catalyst housing (be careful not to damage it). If yours doesn't have screws on each side, you may be able to use a pair of pliers instead.
3 . Clean the catalyst- The catalyst is a small plastic capsule that has an opening on one end and a rubber stopper on the other. It allows the fuel to enter the engine, but also acts as a filter for harmful particles. If it's clogged with carbon or debris, you may see white smoke emitted from your exhaust pipe when you turn on your car.
